The Curse

Chapter 2

Hours after her mother left, Hwangbo meet up with her closet friends in a café near her house. She really need all the advice and help with her current situation. As soon as the girls arrived they huddled in the farthest corner and listen to Hwangbo’s predicament.

“I can’t believe that your Omma still believe in curses. It’s so yesterday.” Boram exclaimed. “So what are your plans now?

“I don’t have one. She was not worried before coz I have Junri. But now that I’m back being single… Argghhh… What am I going to do” she ranted.

“Then maybe you can reconcile with Junri.” Boram suddenly blurted. Hwangbo turned to her and gave her a deadly glare. She cowered towards Song Eunnie and said sorry to Hwangbo.

“If getting back with Junri is not an option then what about Junjin. He’s your closest friend. He’ll understand your situation and maybe asked you to get married immediately." Eunnie advised.

“Do you think so, Unni? I mean he just got out of the military.” Hwangbo asked while also contemplating.

“He’s your best friend. He can’t say no to you.” Eunnie replied.

“Ok. Wait, where’s my phone? I’ll call him now so we can meet tonight. I need to tell him soon so we can plan." Hwangbo excitedly explain.

“Aja, Hyejungie!!” Boram and Eunnie whispered while Hwangbo tried calling Junjin.

“Hello, Jinnie-ah...” She started. “Would you like free dinner? Meet me later. I’ll reserve a table for us in our fave place.” She happily chatted. “Ok. See you later.” Then she ended the call.

“Did he agree Unnie.” Boram inquired.

“Yes he did. “ Hwangbo replied. “Ya! I’m so nervous. How will I tell him?”

“Just tell it to him straight. Just like what I said, I know he will understand.” Eunnie tried to calm her.

“I hope so. And if it’s gonna be Junjin, I know Mom won’t object.” She told the girls and asked  “Would it be okay if we head home now? I need to make reservation and prepare for tonight.”

Both girls nodded their head and wished her luck. They separate ways and Hwangbo began preparing for her date.

At around seven in the evening, Hwangbo nervously walked towards their reserved table. She actually rehearsed everything she has to say to Junjin. She calmly made a beeline to their table and saw her friend talking on the phone. As soon as he saw her, he waved his hand and motioned her to take the seat as he is still on a call. Hwangbo took the seat in front of him and wait for him to finish his call.

“Ya, Jungie, why do you have to treat me tonight?” Junjin enthusiastically asked her as soon as he ended the call.

“Well, what's wrong with asking my best friend out? It’s our first dinner after your military service. And I need to ask you a favor” Hwangbo answered.

“I’m just so glad that it’s over. I miss you and our friends. By the way Jungie..." Junjin was not able to finish what he was saying. He seems to be looking at something behind her. Hwangbo was a bit confused at his action and was even more shocked when she saw a beautiful girl approaching their table. The girl stopped beside her while Junjin stood up and reached for her hands.

“Hyejung, I invited Natasha. I know you wouldn’t mind right?" He shyly told Hwangbo and asked the waiter to put another chair on their table.

Hwangbo just nodded her head and just watched how Junjin fussed over the girl. He even assisted Natasha as she took the seat.

“Natasha, I want you to meet my bestfriend, Hyejung. HyeJung, she’s my girlfriend." Jun jin introduced the two. Natasha smiled sweetly at Hyejung and shook her hands.

“Hi Natasha. Nice meeting you.” Hwangbo greeted the shy girl as they shake hands. “So, Junjin how’d you two meet?” She asked as they wait for the menu.

“I met her in a cafe a month after the service. She was sitting all alone and I can’t help but notice her. She’s so beautiful.” Junjin replied while staring at the blushing Natasha.

“She is.” Hwangbo answered back.

“I heard so much about you from Junjin. I’m so glad to finally meet you.” Natasha told her.

“I hope they’re all good huh. If he said something bad, let me tell you. That’s all a lie.” She replied.

Junjin, interrupted her and asked “So, Jungie –ah, what‘s the favor that you’re going to ask?”

Flustered, Hwangbo quickly think of an answer.

“Junjín-ah, it’s nothing big. I’ll just need to ask you to give something to Andy. But I guess I better give it to him personally.”

“Are you sure, Jungie? I can drop by his place after sending Natasha home.” Her best friend replied.
“I’ m sure Jin. Come on just eat. It’s my treat for you two.” Hwangbo answered with a smile.

They enjoyed the fancy dinner for almost an hour. Junjin told them stories from his military service. Natasha told stories of her hometown- Malaysia. She went to Korea just two years ago. All the while Hwangbo was just looking at them. She can see how smitten Junjin is with Natasha and her to him. She’s so happy for her friend and she can’t even bear the thought of asking him the "real favor”.

The couple and her called it a night at around 10pm. Before getting into her car, Hwangbo hugged Natasha and asked her to take care of Junjin. She smiled and answered sincerely that she will. Hwangbo bid goodbye and drove away leaving the couple still holding hands.

Hwangbo decided to drop at her favorite café’ before heading to her house. The café is not so crowded anymore but she chose a secluded space- her favorite spot actually but was disappointed when she saw that someone’s already sitting there. She turned back to look for another table when somebody called her name.

“ Hwangbo Noona.”

The Curse

It's a Saturday afternoon and Hwangbo’s too busy cleaning her house. She’s waiting for her mother to arrive since she called her that she’d be coming over. It’s been months since she last saw her Mother due to her busy works schedule and her Mom went to visit their relatives months back. She really missed their bonding moments. She ran towards the door and opens it enthusiastically as soon as she heard the bell rang…
“Omma, I’m so glad to see you.” She exclaimed and gave her mother a hug.

“Aigoo! This big baby. Come on let’s get inside.” Her mother playfully said.

Hwangbo helped her bring in the package she’s carrying. They went straight to the kitchen since she knows that these are all the food she loves. Her Mom laughed at her once again as she unwrapped every package with glee.
“Omma, I miss your cooking. I miss these foods.” And she hugged her once again.
“I know Jungie. That’s why I packed a lot for you and Junri to share. By the way, where is he?” her mother enquired.

“He’s not here Mom and this are mine alone.” She simply replied. “Mom come on, let’s eat. I’m suddenly soooo hungry.” Hwangbo even added a cute pout.

“Ya, Jungie save some for my son in law. You also need to watch out what you eat or else you’ll get fat.” Her mother reminded her.

She just shrugged her shoulder and pulled her mother to take a seat, and they ate while chatting about her Mother’s vacation in the province. When Hwangbo finished eating she asked her Mom to stay in the living room while she washed the dishes. After about 15 minutes she heads to the living room with a bowl of cut fruits. She found her mother inspecting the pictures on the side table, a frown very evident on her face. Hwangbo sat next to her and put her arms around her shoulders.

“Omma, what’s wrong?” she asked.

“Hye Jung, where are Junri’s photos? I can clearly remember there used to be pictures of him here. There are also pictures of you together. Where are they and why aren’t here anymore?” her mother asked in a very serious tone.

Hyejung sighed wondering why her Mom looked so worried. She broke up with boyfriends before and she used to tell her about it. She would console her and calm her but she never seen her so disturbed- unlike right now.

“Omma, we broke up two months ago.” She replied.

“Hye Jung, you have to get back together. You have to. You need to get married soon.” Her mother demanded her.

"Omma, Junri and I are history. I will never get back with that two-faced skunk.” Hwangbo replied with disgust.

“But Hye Jung, you need to get married soon. “ Her mother pleaded.

“Omma, I’m still young. I’m only 32. I know I will definitely find a man better that him. I don’t need to rush.” She answered back.

All of a sudden Hwangbo’s mother burst into tears. Confused, Hwangbo tried pacifying her.

“Omma, what’s wrong? Tell me what’s bothering you? I will get married but not with Junri. I will find myself a man.”

" But Hye Jung, you have to get married soon. Before your 33rd birthday to be exact." her Mom replied still in tears.

" I dont understand why I need to rush, Omma. Tell me exactly the reason why I have too." Hyejung asked in confusion.

" Because you will die Hye Jung. I dont want to lose you." her Omma blurted.

" Omma, I cant understand you. Why will I die? "

Her Mom tried hard to compose herself so she can explain everything.

" HyeJung, its a curse in the family. It started with our forefathers. One of her daughter remained single until age of 33. When he saw how unhappy her daughter was, how she envy her other siblings with family, he wished for her to just die. He'd rather her pass away that suffer loneliness. And that curse was transferred to every girl in the family. Girls should get married before they reach 33 years old or else they'll die. "

" That's absurd, Omma. Do you believe that?" Hye jung scofffed.

" I cant take a risk Hye jung. Two of your great Aunts died at that age." she replied

" Omma, its just coincidence. Maybe they're already sick or something." Hwangbo argued.

" Coincidence or not, I'd rather be safe. I will also die if I'll lose you. Please Hye Jung. Just listen to me." her mother pleaded.

" Omma, please dont say such a thing. We'll both gonna be okay. "

" Promise me Jungie. Promise me that you'll get married soon. If you cant find a man within a month, I'll be the one to set you up and you cant refuse the man I'll choose."

" Omma, that's not fair. " Hye Jung rebuts.

" Find a man or I'll find one for you. I'll go now Jungie. I'm doing this cause I love you. " and her mother gave her a hug before leaving her still in shock.
